Y2K fashion is back and how!

Aathirai Rajasekar | June 24, 2021

If you have been doom scrolling on Instagram just like I have, you must have seen a lot of influencers talk about Y2K! Well, if you don’t know what Y2K stands for, it means the Year 2000. Yes, you read that right and for those of you sighing thinking about the good times, I hear you! This term is mostly used in the fashion scene where trends from the early 90s and 2000s are making a comeback. I mean, who doesn’t like the style of Poo from K3G or Regina George from Mean girls and not to forget the OG, Cher from Clueless. However, the real stars of Y2K fashion are Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Christina Aguilera to name a few.

If you wanna hop on the Y2K train, here are a few things you need to know. Some of the notable trends are midriff flossing, baguette bags, bucket hats and shiny clothes. Right from the fit to the colours, here are the highlights of some trends from Y2K:

  1. Mini Skirts/ Skater skirts: Though mini skirts haven’t gone out of style, skater/ tennis skirts have come back and how! We recently saw fashion houses like Saint Laurent and Gucci bring it back on their runway. You can also check out pleated mini skirts, checkered skirt and leather skirt to channel your inner millennial.

  2. Baguette bags- My personal favourite by far! These cutesy bags are not only perfect for every occasion, they’re also easy on the shoulders. Recently, I had purchased one in lilac, one of the prominent colours in the Y2K palette.

  3. Midriff flossing- Midriff flossing is the trend of wrapping straps over the stomach area. These are not only sultry but also uber-chic. If this lockdown has driven you to come out of your comfort zone and try out new things, this is your cue to spice things up!

  4. Bucket hats and Bandanas- Enough said! There’s nothing cooler than rocking a bandana, ripped cardigan and coloured sunglasses and for the tomboy in you, go for a bucket hat, baby tee and wide legged trousers!

  5. Chunky sneakers and Platform heels- Sometime last year, we bid adieu to our fav pair of stills and wedges, only to befriend sneakers and sandals. Ace designer Pierre Hardy, creative director of Hermes shoes said that sneakers are the new heels. Moreover, what was once referred to as “ugly shoes”, are making headlines in fashion magazines now. This trend is here to stay and we’re all for it!

  6. Ribbed/ Buttoned down cardigan- With monsoon around the corner, ain’t nothing like the comfort of a cute cardigan. I have seen this become a staple in every fast fashion brands’ must haves. From Hailey Beiber to the Kardashians, we’ve seen all our favourite celebs rock this trend.

  7. Vintage/ Coloured Sunglasses- If you are looking to buy new sunnies, Y2K has got your back. If you wanna rock the OG Y2K look, go for rimless ones like they did back in the day!

The ones I’ve mentioned here are mere favourites of the internet. However, some of the trends that fall under this category are snakeskin, body chains, crochet and chokers. Crochet and chokers made their way through sometime in 2018, which is passé now. However, the others didn’t make a strong comeback!

They say fashion is all about bringing back trends and putting a spin to it! Well, thanks to the millennials for having come up with such snazzy and distinguished style, one can never be bored of the endless possibilities of styling these pieces.
