Men's fashion as it is!

Aathirai Rajasekar | May 10, 2021

I have always marveled at how men’s fashion seems simple but the intricacies are insane! Right from the fabrics to the patterns, it is a world of its own. However, the majority of men don’t spend much time thinking about what to wear or buy. I don’t blame them, (looking right at patriarchy’s face) but I do take offense to the fact that men think dressing up is easy/unnecessary. However, lack of knowledge/inspiration might also lead to ignorance. Thanks to social media, we’re slowly learning and unlearning things.

Having said that, here is a simple guide to help you understand the art of dressing!

First and foremost, if you’re someone who thinks wearing tracks/pyjamas to a public forum is acceptable, I’m sorry you need to change that before anything else! Unless you’re wearing well fitted joggers, do not think about showing up for a date with your girlfriend in them.

Here’s a basic guide to have a GQ-esque wardrobe:

  1. A plain/ solid colored Linen shirt- A crisp white/beige shirt would be my first preference but a little color to your wardrobe might do you some good! A salmon pink or powder blue would be the best bet apart from olive green/brown.

How to wear- You can ace the look by pairing them with a cotton trouser(for brownie points) or chinos!

  2. Bermuda shorts- Now this is a TPS approved outfit for casual dates. Again, pairing them with a linen shirt would be super cas’ yet effortless!

How to wear- For someone who is just starting out, a basic tee or nautical shirt would seal the deal.

  3. Bomber jackets- How can you not want to own something that has “bomb” in it? Bear with me for my banal pj :p, but jokes apart, have you ever seen someone look uncool in a bomber jacket? Especially, If you’re a party animal, this is a must have in your wardrobe.

How to wear- Pair it with jeans and sneakers.

  4. Ultra wide legged trouser- I am sure we’ve all seen Harry Styles pull this off so effortlessly. This might not be the best choice for the faint hearted ones, but what’s life without a little risk? To begin with you can start with wide legged trousers if you haven’t tried them, if you wanna go for the big guns remember to thank me later.

  5. Creative shirts- The easiest of the lot to begin with. Bold shirts or tees (shirts being my personal preference) can crank your casual look up by a notch.

How to wear- Again, easiest to style as well. You can literally wear them with jeans, trousers, chinos and what not!

Apart from all these do, here are some “dont’s” that might come in handy for you:

  1. Don’t buy bright colored shorts especially if you haven’t worked with them already. Stick to warmer tones or neutral shades.
  2. Do not pair sliders or flip flops with formals or semi formals as it takes away the elegance of the look.
  3. Do not restrict yourself by sticking to a specific colour palette. Experiment as much as you’d like but make sure you can pair them in different ways in order to have a vast wardrobe!
  4. Do not shy away from skin care and make up. If you’re one of those people who think makeup and skincare are for women, I’m sorry you need to get rid of that mindset. Cleanse, tone and moisturize religiously. Dab on the right shade of concealer to give you that extra glow.
  5. Do not underestimate the power of crisp clothes! Even if the outfit is as simple as a white shirt and black trouser, pairing them with the right accessories and wearing properly ironed clothes, can take you a long way!

Always remember to spend responsibly and do not purchase for the sake of it. However, next time when you’re shopping, use this blog as a reference. I have always been influenced by blogs and have purchased impulsively and I hope my audience is smarter than that! It’s never too late to look dapper!

Cheers, amigos!
